Respect
We just finished hammering through the point system that the panel of judges will use here in Montreal for the next Mr. Rubber Montreal contest the weekend of November 21st. It took over 2 hours to work out what was to be judged and how much each component would be worth. I am very happy with the results and hope that this scoring system will help us choose the next winner in a fair and unbiased way.
One of the things that I insisted in including in the calculations is that candidates must show respect for each other. Too many times, I have seen candidates do their performance and leave the stage in a dangerous state for those following. We had a big discussion about this; questioning whose responsibility it is to keep things safe for all. In the end, I imagine that the promoters must ensure that the contestants are not going to slip on lube and break anything. However, any contestant who leaves the stage like this basically sabotages the contestants who follow. Personally, I think that this 'winning at all costs' attitude does not reflect our rubber lifestyle.
I hope that this blog entry will encourage promoters to incorporate this element in their scoring systems. Rubber is about having fun. Let's keep it that way.
