It took over 2 hours to work out what was to be judged and how much each component would be worth. I am very happy with the results and hope that this scoring system will help us choose the next winner in a fair and unbiased way.

One of the things that I insisted in including in the calculations is that candidates must show respect for each other. Too many times, I have seen candidates do their performance and leave the stage in a dangerous state for those following. We had a big discussion about this; questioning whose responsibility it is to keep things safe for all. In the end, I imagine that the promoters must ensure that the contestants are not going to slip on lube and break anything. However, any contestant who leaves the stage like this basically sabotages the contestants who follow. Personally, I think that this 'winning at all costs' attitude does not reflect our rubber lifestyle.

I hope that this blog entry will encourage promoters to incorporate this element in their scoring systems. Rubber is about having fun. Let's keep it that way.

BJ Turgeon
MIRubber2008@videotron.ca

My MIR experience

As promised, I am going to write about my MIR experience so that I can perhaps give some insight into the contest for those thinking about entering. I will add some photos highlighting the different parts a bit later on.

Before I get into all of the details of the weekend, I have to say that the MIR experience is a fantastic one. It seems big, but being well prepared makes all of the difference. I was very lucky to have my partner there with me to support me. As it turned out, he was very helpful with everyone. I think that, if you can, it is nice to have a friend with you for support. For me, a major part of the MIR experience was to have fun and to get to know the other contestants as we shared this weekend adventure. Had EricPierre and I kept to ourselves and not socialized with the group, I (we) would have missed out on something very special. The camaraderie that you can develop with the other contestants will last a lifetime. So, before you decide to have someone come along to help you out, make sure that this person realizes why you are there so that he can help you attain that goal. Winning is only one part of the weekend; it is the journey that makes the weekend memorable and a positive experience.

Before heading to Chicago, I looked at all of the different events and planned my gear. I am the king of procrastination. (You can see this by the date of this entry…it should have been done last December!) It is important to have it all planned out so that you don’t panic. You don't want to decide at the last minute what you are going to wear. Travelling with rubber is a costly business with gas prices soaring and rubber being very heavy in your airplane luggage.

I think that the best thing about rubber competitions is that you can really be yourself. If you have ever thought of entering MIR, then you should go for it. Rubber really has no rules, except no sharp objects…but that goes for a lot of things.

Friday's Greet the Meat Cocktail Party at the Chicago Cell Block is a lot of fun. The bar was full of hot, sexy rubbermen. I met the judges and the other contestants and we drew numbers for our order in the competition. This is the first time that I met the other contestants. It was nice to get to know them as we all embarked on this wild journey.

Phil, the contestant wrangler, was really nice and helpful. He made sure that everyone was where he was supposed to be throughout the weekend. If ever we needed anything, Phil was there to help us out.

I have to say that having my partner with me was great. EricPierre was very supportive and helpful, not only for me, but for the other contestants as well. He helped me get organized and always had my gear ready to go.

The Friday night, I did my best to get to bed as early as possible after meeting tons of nice people at the bar. I wanted to be in top shape for the interviews on Saturday morning.

EricPierre and I had a nice brunch at the Kit Kat Club before I headed over to the Center on Halsted for the interviews. It was a bit stressful waiting for my turn in front of the judges.
Again, Phil did his best to keep everyone relaxed while we waited. It was a nice time to chat with the other contestants and get to know them. An atmosphere of camaraderie was growing as we supported each other.

The judges were very nice and they put me at ease right away. It was very casual. They asked me all sorts of questions to try and get to know me as a regular person and as a rubberman. They wanted to know what I represented, and of course, why I wanted to become MIR2008. It was relaxed and a lot of fun. I have used this experience to guide me when judging other competitions. It makes it nice for everyone.

That evening, there was the Wet Rubber Competition. I have to say that that was the most difficult part for me. Wearing rubber and sweating profusely go hand in hand. I love that. The water aspect, and the fact that I was to be alone on the stage, were very intimidating. I have never really had a water fantasy before and didn't know how I could make that exciting for the judges and the people watching.
In the end, I tried to incorporate things that I like doing and the cleanup in the shower that always feels so good. Eddie, the sexy MC, read my text excruciatingly slow. In my planning, I read it quite quickly. Keep that in mind when you are putting together your show. I guess that it was a success. You can see my "performance" on Rubber Zone in the videos section. Oh, by the way, be ready for some drastic water temperature variations. It is shocking, but all good fun just the same. No matter what happens, just have fun. That is what the judges want to see. Once again, the Cell Block was packed with hot rubbermen. There was a noticeable smell of rubber and testosterone in the air.

After that part of the competition, I decided to go back to the hotel to get some rest, resisting the temptation of continuing on to the play party with the men that EricPierre and I had met. Apparently it was a terrific party, but one has to make choices. . .EricPierre made it easier for me by being the voice of reason and forcing me to bed. It took the edge off. :-D

The Sunday morning rolled around and I was still exhausted from Friday's and Saturday's events. The competition was held at the Circuit Nightclub. We were all excited about the competition. EricPierre helped us getting in and out of gear and shining each other up before we got on stage. We all had a terrific time on stage and off. The pop questions were funny and the grab-bag part of the competition was hilarious. We were all stressed about what could possibly be in each bag. We were to take these basic items and use them in a safe and kinky way on our sexy Guiney pig. Check out all of the grab-bag videos on Rubber Zone. It was a lot of fun.

The contest, spread out over 3 days, is quite taxing. It was the longest competition that I have ever entered. I was happy to be well-rested before heading into it.

When the judges had tallied up the scores and it was all over, I couldn't believe that my name was announced as the winner. I had a gut feeling that I had done well, but I had the same feeling about the other contestants. I had really gone into the competition to have fun and meet some fun people. Of course, I wanted to win, but I think that reminding myself that I was there to have fun no matter what was a key factor in my success. Of course, having my partner there, keeping me grounded, helped a little bit, . . .ok, a lot. I can happily say that it was a great experience that we shared and lived together.
BJ
MIRubber2008@videotron.ca

effen.com

Effen vodka
Effen vodka is the coolest looking vodka that I have ever seen. Purchasing a bottle to take home is on the top of my list of things to do when in Chicago this November for MIR2009. Unfortunately for me, they are not located in Montreal. After the contest last November, my partner and I and a friend (hey David!) had a wonderful time at the Chicago location. If you want to get an idea of the kind of sauna that Steamworks is, I can sum it up with an example of the many services that they offer: a "Listerine" water fountain. Rubbermade and I worked at both the Priape and MIR booths. It was great having all the people pass by to say hi, and in the case of working at Priape, helping them in and out of the Polymorphe rubber. It was a tough job, (ya, right!), but somebody had to do it.

We got a nice surprise on Friday when we went to work at Priape. There, on one of the pillars, along with huge posters of Bob, M. Cuir Montreal 2008 and Stephane, M. Rubber Montreal 2007, was a huge poster of me! I certainly wasn't expecting that, but was very happy to see it. I want to thank the Priape team for that and also for being such great people to work with. So I had to get a picture of it, with me of course!

The toughest job is actually when you come home from all of the excitment of the weekend and reality hits: We have to clean all of our rubber! Ah, there is nothing like excess! We really need to get ourselves a house boy or a house puppy. Oh right, I guess that that is supposed to be me.

BJ
MIRubber2008@videotron.ca

Rubberdawg.com

Friday night at IML was an extremely busy night with too many things to see and do. RubberWilli is the man behind MIR; the guy who works relentlessly all year long to put together the MIR weekend. The "Rubber Agenda" is just one thing that RubberWilli does to promote MIR during the year. (Just the name "The Rubber Agenda" brings a smile to my face. I love it!)

It takes a special person to be able to rally sponsors, volunteers and businesses in order to put together an event. RubberWilli does all of this almost effortlessly. (Ok, at the end of MIR last year, I remember that he was toast; exhausted, but with a contented smile on his face after a job well done.) I know that I have no idea of the huge amount of work that goes into planning and orchestrating a weekend like MIR, but I do know what I saw: Hundreds of people having a terrific time. RubberWilli humbly says that he does it all for himself. Well, even if this is so, which I don't believe, we all certainly enjoy the ride. Be sure to tell him how much you enjoy yourself at his events so that he will continue to "selfishly" organize them.

Bouncily yours,
BJ
MIRubber2008@videotron.ca

Event organizers

Yes, I know, I am late with my comments, but life races on and I just have to catch up when I have the chance.

For some time now, I have wanted to thank Mitch again for Rubbout and have wanted also to highlight to everyone who reads my blog how much work goes into organizing a weekend of activities.

With the Legende Urbaine, our fetish club here in Montreal, we organize club nights: events that last just one evening. The hours of time needed for the organization of resources is incredible, and this, just for one evening of fun. Mitch organizes a whole weekend of fun rubber activities. Be sure to thank him for all of his work the next time you see him. He is a very dedicated rubberman and a good puppy!

I am proud to say that, after my top whipping performance at the Strict Rubber Dress Code Party at IML, (that he found quite entertaining and motivational :-) ), I was able to bring out the Top flogger in Mitch. I have been busy building a flying saucer.

Friday night at PumpJack's Pub was a great kickoff to the weekend. I met and chatted with tons of really nice guys. The atmosphere was sexy and guys were checking each other out, getting ready for the weekend's events.

The fun continued later that evening at Numbers, where the bar was packed with hot, very friendly men in rubber. The pool table housed a vac-rack and Mitch did his magic to a victim with a vibrator It wasn’t the last time that we would see that! The evening continued at Friction where a play party lasted into the night. Many played at the various play stations in the sauna. The stocks were well used and several men took a swim in the J-Lube pool. Bleu will never be the same after his jaunt in the pool. My evening was especially memorable as I got leied, Hawaiian style.

I got a taste of the cube the following day at PumpJack's Pub. Mitch was very kind, ensuring that no ice was around when I went in it. It is a great experience for anyone into bondage. What a feeling! Mitch had his vibrator again. Push as I may, that vibrator wasn't going in anywhere! I was very lucky to have the experience. The rubber ripped a little while after. I hope that Mitch was able to repair it. Those cubes, while being a lot of fun, are quite expensive.

Saturday evening, there was a party at the Davie's Café. The place was packed and the people, friendly and fun. There was a lot to see and do. Jimmy, the sexy barber, was there to trim those needing trimming. Michael, Mr West Coast Rubber 2006 and Bleu, his pup, did a cool balloon demonstration. I had had an experience with a friend that ended in the balloon popping before my friend could be completely put in. It was great to see how it all worked and especially to see how to do it securely. The music was great and Bar Piersdorff, a great guy and a fantastic photographer was there to capture the energy and all of the activities on film.

I had an excellent time at Rubbout. The activities were well-planned and seemed to go on without a hitch. Shuttles were convenient and the venues were well equipped. Thank you and congratulations to Mitch, Don and the other organizers.

bj
MIRubber2008@videotron.ca

Europe this summer?

Howdy,

We, Rubbermade and I, are looking to travel to Europe this summer to attend any rubber/fetish events and promote MIR, Montreal, and rubber fun in general. This is the first rubber competition that Calgary has had and its success will ensure that it becomes an annual event. Priape and the new M. Rubber Montreal, Stephane Donaldson organized the competition. I helped out by making the bilingual application form, and I have to say that it is brilliant; just like my name in French.

The rubber scene in Calgary is growing and, with the enthusiasm that the two contestants had, it is sure to blossom. Reid and Doug went through a series of steps, showing off their best rubber and also their imaginations. It was a very close contest; both candidates were strong contenders. In the end, Reid came through with a 3 point advance over Doug out of a total of 300 points. Very close!

A mixed crowd filled the Calgary Eagle in time for the competition. Many curious people came out to see what it was all about. From vanilla to rubbery extremes, everyone seemed to enjoy himself. I believe that next year Calgary will even see a few guys in rubbery drag as many of them in attendance really enjoyed the evening and will surly find ways to incorporate the two fetishes.

Master Barry did a great job as MC for the evening.

A big thank you goes to the co judges: Jimmy from Priape and Mike, Mr. Leather Calgary, for all of their help. I wish Mike the best of luck as he competes at IML in May.

I would especially like to thank Jimmy and Priape for their generosity in keeping me hydrated throughout the evening. It was much appreciated.

Mario from Polymorphe here in Montreal generously supplied the winner with a fantastic vest to commemorate the title.

I have to add that the staff at the Calgary Eagle was most welcoming. Ian was my knight in shining armour, driving me home at the end of the night when no cabs were available. He even did it knowing that I didn't know the address of where I was going. I was secretly hoping that we would not find it at all and that he would take me home, but he knows the city too well.

Have fun wearing your rubber!

BJ
Mr. International Rubber 2008

Mr. Rubber Cleveland 2/29-3/1

I know I said I wasn't going to but in here, but here I go anyway!

Just a quick share of info.
